Description
DDGS or Dried Distillers Grains with Solubles, are a by-product of the corn-based ethanol industry. During the production of ethanol from the dry grinding of corn kernels, starch is removed from the kernel and converted to alcohol. As a result of starch extraction, the concentration of the remaining nutrients in the grain increases almost 3 times.
The by-product is sold with 65% moisture (wet mocking or WDGS). Subsequently, it is subjected to a drying process that reduces its moisture content to 10-12% (DDGS). Compared to corn that is used as a substrate, DDGS has a higher concentration of protein, fat, fiber, vitamins and minerals, constituting an alternative nutritional source for animal production.
Application
Feeding of pigs in the final stage of growth. Also widely used in ruminants.
Other Considerations
From one ton of corn, 400 liters of ethanol are obtained, 300 kg of DDGS (on a dry basis) or DDGS and about 300 kg of CO2. The yield of by-products is generally 30% of the processed raw material. In relation to the liters of bioethanol, approximately 0.75 kg of DDGS are obtained per liter of ethanol
